Philadelphia Apartment Moves: How to Request a Moving Company COI
Moving into or out of a Philadelphia apartment can involve more than reserving a truck. Some buildings ask for a certificate of insurance, often called a COI, before a moving company can work on the property. Asking about it early can help keep your move on schedule.
What is a moving company COI?
A certificate of insurance summarizes information about a moving company's insurance policies. Building management may request one as part of its move-in or move-out process. Requirements differ by property, so ask your building for its instructions rather than assuming every building needs the same document.
A COI is evidence of insurance information; it does not by itself change a policy or guarantee coverage for your belongings. Ask your mover about the valuation or protection available for your items and review the terms of your move.
How to request a COI for your apartment move
1. Ask management for its written requirements. Request a sample COI or the exact certificate holder name and address, any additional insured wording or endorsements, insurance limits, and the submission deadline.
2. Send the requirements to your moving company. Include your move date, building address and unit number, and the contact information for the person who reviews the certificate. Ask the mover whether it can meet the building's requirements.
3. Confirm delivery and acceptance. Give the building time to review the document and let your mover know if management requests changes. A certificate may need to be obtained for both the building you are leaving and the one you are entering.
Coordinate the rest of your building move
Ask about moving hours, elevator reservations, loading dock access, protective materials, and any required deposits. Measure the elevator and key doorways if you are moving large furniture. If street parking is needed, plan the truck's access ahead of time.
